Unfortunately, for contact lens wearers, this can create, as well as indicate any number of problems. In order to deal with these issues effectively, it is important to understand what is causing the irritation, as well as how to resolve it.

As you are aware, eyelids can feel itchy, just like any other part of the body. If you rub your eyes, chances are you will dislodge your contact lens. This will either result in it wadding up in a corner of your eye, or falling out altogether. The best thing you can do if your eyes feel itchy is to close your eyelids, and gently rub the outer corner. This will help relieve the irritation, and also will have a much lesser chance of dislodging the contact lens.

Since your contact lenses rely on the same tear ducts as your eyes do to provide moisture, your eyes are more than likely to feel dry. There are a number of inexpensive moisturizing drops available for use with contact lenses. If the dryness does not go away, or feels really uncomfortable, keep a pair of glasses with you, as well as some saline and a contact lens storage case so that you can remove your lenses.

Finally, any changes in eyesight, redness, soreness, or lumps should be reported immediately to your eye doctor. Allergic response the chemicals used to clean and store your contact lenses may cause some problems. On the other hand, you may have developed an eye infection that requires antibiotics. As with many other things, the sooner you get treatment, the less a chance you have of causing permanent harm to your eyes.

One of the most important things you can do to prevent infection is hold fast to two simple rule. If the contact lens is not in your eye, it needs to be in a sterile environment. Even if your lens becomes dislodged, and only sits on your finger for a few seconds, it is better to be safe than sorry. Before the lens goes back into your eye, it needs to be completely sterilized. Considering that there are solutions that can accomplish this task in under five minutes, there is no reason whatsoever for putting a contact lens into your eye without being sure it is free of microbes first.

Depending on how well your eyes adapt to contact lenses, you may experience itching, dryness, and allergic responses. There are some things you can do to alleviate all of these problems. While many people wind up with at least one eye infection, they are wholly preventable with some sensible precautions.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Galia_Mendelson

Vision and Nutrition - The Windows to Our World

How many times have we had conversations with our friends and relatives about which of our five senses were the most important to us. What is really true, is that they all are important and what is more important is that it is best if they are all healthy and in good working order.

Nutrition for the eyes is sometimes overlooked, as we seem to dwell and focus on the heart, cancer and blood pressure, however, if we maintain our eyes in a healthy manner all during our life they will serve us well into our sunset years.

I am sure we all remember our mothers telling us to eat our carrots so we could see good, this is a true story. Carrots aid not only in healthy eyes but aids in not getting what they call night blindness. Now they have found that even tho carrots rank high in healthy eye nutrition the green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, collard greens and turnip greens are potent antioxidants; which can protect the eyes against cataracts and age related macular degeneration.

The old saying "you are what you eat" is becoming more and more true, we can now see that our diets and what we eat, play a role in keeping our eyes healthy and in good functioning condition.

Here is a list of foods to eat for good 20/20 vision diet: kale, spinach, broccoli, avocados, zucchini, peas, all dark leafy salad greens. Carrots, mangoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, apricots, green peppers, almonds, wheat germ, lentils.

As you can see many of these foods are on the same list as healthy super foods for heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer prevention. The basic idea is to eat healthy whole organic foods that feed our bodies not only our taste buds and to develop a lifestyle the incorporates these healthy foods into our diets.

Happy Eating and Healthy Living

Thought for the Day: "True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom know until it be lost." -Caleb Colton-

Darlene has researched, practiced and implemented many spiritual and personal growth paths: Crystal Readings for Vibrant Living; Feng Shui for personal tranquility; Sacred Movements for a disciplined life; Gentle Touch Energy Healer; Whole and organic food advocate-Food as Medicine; Artist of hand woven and beaded amulet basket necklaces. But one of the downfalls of this great invention is contact lens maintenance. While a lot of people skip this important step, you should know that not caring for your contact lenses correctly can lead to a host of eye infections and in some rare cases even blindness.

But there is no excuse for not caring for your lenses properly as it's never been easier to care for them. Today, you can go through your whole maintenance routine using just one type of solution which means that caring for your lenses is quicker and cheaper than even just a few years ago.

Below are five common steps one should take in order to provide proper contact lens maintenance. This will ensure that your lenses are sterilized and clean before you put them in your eyes and will lessen the chance of infection and eye injury. You should consult your eye care practitioner as to the appropriate care for your particular contact lenses.

1. Wash your hands. While this might seem like common sense, it's important to note that before you put in or remove your contact lenses you should wash your hands so that they are free of dirt, germs and debris. When you do this step, however, avoid using a moisturizing soap since this is not good for contacts. After washing, use a lint free towel to dry your hands.

2. Remove one of your lenses and clean it as recommended on the bottle of solution that you use as per your eye care practitioner's recommendation. Cleaning per the instructions is important because this will remove the protein deposits as well as other debris that build up on your lenses and can cause discomfort as well as impair the way you see through them. Some solutions will have you rubbing the lens and others will just have you rinsing it.

3. Rinse the lens per instructions. This is important because this will wash off the loosened debris.

4. Make sure your contact lens holder is clean and fill one side with your soaking in disinfecting solution in place the lens in the case. Disinfecting your lenses for the recommended amount of time is important because this will kill the microorganisms that could be growing on the lens and will help you avoid infection.

5. Repeat for the other lens.

In addition to these steps, your doctor may recommend an enzymatic cleaner that removes proteins build up. This typically is not needed for disposable lenses, but if you have lenses that you wear for a year or more the protein buildup can make them uncomfortable in impair your vision.

Proper contact lens maintenance is a part of wearing contact lenses, if you don't think that you can maintain them properly then you might try disposable ones that don't need any maintenance or go back to wearing eyeglasses. You only have two eyes, and to lose his sight in one because you didn't care for your contact lenses would be a shame so think twice before skipping these important steps.

Visit http://www.contactlensuse.com for more information on contact lenses including articles on different types and styles of lenses as well as tips on proper contact lens maintenance.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Lee_Dobbins

Contact Lenses

Almost everyone wears contact lenses these days. In fact, you can't really tell who is and who isn't and some do not even wear them for vision correction.

Athletes wear specific ones to have sharper vision while celebrities and Halloween enthusiasts wear coloured ones to go with matching outfits. They are ideal for people who have myopia (short-sightedness) or hyperopia (long-sightedness) where those affected are unable to focus light directly on the retina.

How do contact lenses stay comfortable, one might ask? Soft Contact Lenses
Soft Contact lenses are the most popular amongst the majority these days. It is made of flexible plastic that allows oxygen to pass through the cornea. It is more comfortable and easily adjusted compared to rigid gas permeable lenses. Nowadays, they are made of silicone-hydrogels to provide more oxygen flow.

B. Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Contact Lenses
Rigid gas permeable contact lenses (RGPs) take some time for a wearer to get used to due to its rigid nature. However, they are more durable and resistant to deposit buildup, and generally give a clearer, crisper vision. They tend to be less expensive over the life of the lens since they last longer than soft contact lenses.

C. Extended Wear Contact Lenses
Extended wear contact lenses are usually soft contact lenses. They are meant to be worn overnight or continuously wear ranging from one to six nights or up to 30 days. Your eye care professional will first evaluate your tolerance level and he or she will determine the suitable duration to wear.

D. Disposable (Replacement Schedule Contact Lenses)
People obviously treasure convenience; therefore it comes as no surprise that the most popular contact lenses are the disposables. They need not be cleaned and disinfected as compared to regular ones, hence the advantage of complete convenience.

Resources taken from Guardian - The one you trust.

Coloured Contact Lenses

There are 4 different types of coloured contact lenses:
opaque colour tints, light-filtering tints, visibility tints and enhancement tints.

They work just like ordinary ones including correcting astigmatism where rays of light could not converge into a single focal point onto the retina.

Visibility Tints
Visibility tints are usually blue or green in colour and you can easily distinguish them from gravels once on the ground. It is a very light tint and does not affect eye colour.

Enhancement Tint
As the name implies, enhancement tints can change the colour of your eyes. They are meant for people who have light coloured eyes. They are solid and a bit darker than visibility tints.

Coloured Tints
Colured contact lenses come in a variety of colours: hazel, green, blue, violet, amethyst and grey. Due to the popularity of naturalness, coloured tints manufacturers have replicated the coloured portion of the eye. Since this area is made up of a series of colourful shapes and lines, the tiny coloured dots ont he lens blends in with the eye. The center of the lens, the part over your pupil, is clear so you can see.

Light-Filtering Tint
Seeing your target is absolutely crucial in sports. Quick reflexes are needed to manipulate a tennis ball with your racquet or dodging a jab from a boxer, and they all start from having good eyesight. To help you focus so that your target stands out from the background colour, light-filtering tints are used. They enhance certain colours (such as optic yellow, the colour of tennis balls, softballs and golf balls), while muting other colours.

Resources taken from Guardian - The one you trust.

Wearing Lenses Properly

Contact lenses are great substitutes to glasses which tend to fog easily and be misplaced like our wallet/purse and hand phone. This stops you from blinking.

Look upwards and gently place the lens on the lower white part of your eye.

Slowly release your eyelids, and shut your eye for a while.

Blink a few times to center the lens on your eye.

If you feel any sort of discomfort in your eye, remove your lens and inspect it for any scratches or damages. Even residue from moisturisers or cleansers can cause various problems to your eyes and lenses, so wash up!

Make sure your lenses are applied before your makeup.

Slowly apply your eye shadow and eyeliner. Rushing to do the job might cause you to accidentally damage your lenses.

Make sure you use only oil and fragrance-free eye makeup.

Prevent your mascara and eyeliner from getting into your lenses by using only water-resistant mascara and eyeliner.

Replace your mascara every month and your eyeliner every three months.

Always remove your lenses before removing your eye makeup.

Never leave eye makeup on for more than a day because the residue could get into your eyes and stick on your lenses.

Use an oil-free hypoallergenic makeup remover

Don'ts

Do not wear your lenses or apply makeup on your eyes if they're swollen, red or infected.

Do not share your makeup with anyone else.

Do not share your contact lenses (extremely unhygienic!).

Do not apply eyeliner inside of your lashes.

Do not expose your makeup to extreme temperature because it will alter the chemical composition.

Do not wear your lenses to the hair stylist (hair spray and fumes can damage your lenses)

Resources taken from Guardian - The one you trust
